We build custom cabinetry, so believe us when we say this comparison isn't rigged: for plenty of kitchens and bathrooms, stock cabinets are the smarter buy.
When stock cabinets win
- Your room fits standard sizes. Cabinet manufacturing runs on standard increments. If your walls accommodate them without awkward filler strips, stock delivers solid quality for meaningfully less.
- The budget has other jobs to do. Money saved on boxes can buy better counters, better appliances, or simply a finished project instead of a stretched one.
- Timeline matters. Stock ships in days to weeks. Custom is built, which takes the time building takes.
When custom earns its cost
- Odd-sized rooms. Older Central Texas homes rarely respect standard increments. Custom fills the wall exactly — no filler strips, no dead corners, every inch working.
- Storage has to work hard. Small kitchens and one-bathroom houses need cabinets designed around what you actually own, not around a factory's assumptions.
- Matching existing work. Original built-ins in an older home can be matched in profile and proportion — something no catalog can do. That's a core part of our historic and older home restoration work.
- You want it to last decades. Plywood boxes, solid doors, and quality hardware, repairable rather than disposable.
The middle path
Semi-custom — stock lines with modification options — covers a lot of real-world kitchens well, and we'll say so when it's the right fit.
The honest answer for your room takes a tape measure and twenty minutes. See the custom cabinetry and tile service page, what drives cabinet cost, the tile budget guide, and our FAQ.
