The Best Bathroom Remodel Options for an Older Central Texas Home

RBP Home Services · 2026-04-07

If your house went up before 1970 — and a lot of the best streets in Waco, Belton, and Temple did — your bathroom remodel is a different project than the ones on TV. Here's a buyer's guide for it.

Decision 1: The cast iron tub

Original cast iron tubs are heavy, durable, and often worth keeping. Re-glazing restores the finish for far less than removal and replacement, and removal is genuinely disruptive — sometimes the tub has to be broken up in place. Keep it if the tub fits your life; replace it if you truly want a walk-in shower.

Decision 2: Plaster walls

Sound plaster is worth preserving — it's solid and quiet. Failing plaster around a wet area usually needs to come out, because modern waterproofing wants modern backer board behind tile. A good remodeler treats this wall by wall, not house by house. We wrote more in plaster walls: keep or replace.

Decision 3: Layout — fight it or keep it

Older bathrooms are small. The instinct is to move walls, but keeping the footprint and using it smarter — a curbless shower where the tub was, a wall-hung vanity, a pocket door — often gets you 80% of the improvement for far less money and disruption.

Decision 4: Character vs. clean-slate

The most-loved older-home bathrooms keep the character — hex tile floors, period-appropriate fixtures, original windows — and hide the modern performance behind the walls: new supply lines, proper waterproofing, real ventilation. That's the heart of our historic and older home restoration line.

Budget honestly for the unknown

Older homes surprise you. Galvanized plumbing, hidden patches, the occasional rot. The right contractor tells you the day they find it, with photos and options — see how that works on our pricing page and in the risk section of our FAQ. And before committing, make sure you actually need the full job: remodel vs. partial refresh.
