A kitchen remodel puts people in your house for weeks and takes your most-used room out of service. Before you sign with anyone — including us — ask these six questions.
1. "Will you put my start date on the contract before I pay a deposit?"
The single most revealing question in remodeling. Contractors who run real schedules can say yes. Contractors who plan to fit you in "when things open up" will hedge, and the hedge tells you everything. Our answer is yes — it's the core of how we run jobs.
2. "How long will my kitchen be out of service, and how do you know?"
The answer should reference your specific kitchen and scope, not a generic reassurance. Ask what a temporary kitchen setup looks like and who sets it up.
3. "Who exactly will be in my house?"
Names, not "a crew." Ask whether the same people will be there day to day, and who your single point of contact is.
4. "What happens when you find something behind the wall?"
Older Central Texas kitchens hide old wiring and plumbing. The right answer involves same-day communication, photos, and your sign-off before the price changes.
5. "What do you need from me, and when?"
A good remodeler gives you a selections deadline before demo. If nobody mentions selections until the job starts, expect mid-job chaos.
6. "Is this job the right size for you?"
An honest contractor sometimes says no. If every answer in the conversation is a yes, be careful.
