7 Mistakes to Avoid When Hiring a Bathroom Remodeler in Central Texas

RBP Home Services · 2026-06-20

Most bathroom remodels that go wrong were lost before demo day — at the hiring stage. Here are the seven mistakes we see Central Texas homeowners make, and the one question that protects you from most of them.

Mistake 1: Accepting a vague start

"A few weeks out." "Right after we wrap the job in Temple." "Soon." None of that is a commitment, and most remodeling contracts around here are written so it never has to become one. Which brings us to the question this whole article exists for.

Ask every contractor you interview: "Will you put my start date on the contract before I pay a deposit?"

Listen carefully to the answer. A contractor who runs a real schedule can say yes. A contractor who overbooks, floats between jobs, or plans to fit you in "when things open up" cannot — and the hedging you hear is the most useful information you'll get in the entire bid process. Our answer is yes, every time; it's the foundation of how we work.

Mistake 2: Paying a large deposit against nothing

A deposit should buy you a signed contract with a date on it. Money against a verbal "we'll get you scheduled" is how the demo-Monday, gone-Thursday story starts.

Mistake 3: Not asking who will actually be in the house

Get names. Ask whether the same people will be there throughout. "A crew" is not an answer.

Mistake 4: Choosing on price alone

Someone will always bid lower. Ask what the low bid leaves out — usually prep, waterproofing steps, or realistic time for an older home.

Mistake 5: Skipping the what-if conversation

Ask: "What happens when you find something behind the wall?" The right answer involves same-day communication, photos, and your sign-off before costs change. See our process page for how we handle it.

Mistake 6: Making selections mid-job

Pick your tile, vanity, and fixtures before demo. Mid-job decisions get made under pressure and at rush prices. What drives cost is explained plainly on our pricing page.

Mistake 7: Not checking the fit both ways

A good contractor disqualifies too. If nobody in the conversation ever says "this might not be the right project for us," everybody is just selling. Start with our bathroom remodeling page, the remodeler vs. handyman comparison, and the uncomfortable questions we answer in our FAQ.
