Every flooring material wins somewhere. Here's the honest comparison, calibrated to how Central Texas households actually live — kids, dogs, slab foundations, and grit tracked in from July through September.
Luxury vinyl plank (LVP)
Wins on: water resistance, dent and scratch tolerance, comfort underfoot, and forgiving installation over slightly imperfect slabs. For busy households it's the pragmatic champion, which is why it's everywhere. Loses on: resale prestige in higher-end homes, and it can't be refinished — when it's done, it's done.
Tile
Wins on: durability that outlasts everything else, total water immunity, and staying cool — a real feature here. The right choice for baths, laundries, and entries almost every time. Loses on: hardness (dropped dishes lose, standing fatigue is real) and being cold in winter. Installation is slower and substrate-sensitive — see what drives flooring cost.
Hardwood
Wins on: warmth, value, and repairability — it's the only material here you can sand and refinish, which is why 80-year-old wood floors in older Waco homes are still going. If your older home has original wood under carpet, refinishing may beat everything on this list. Loses on: water (kitchens are debatable, baths are a no), scratch visibility with big dogs, and cost.
The honest shortcut
Wet rooms: tile. Main living with kids and dogs: LVP or tile. A home you'll hold for decades, or an older home with original character: wood earns the care it asks.
